Exhibitor: Artist Audrey Palacios

"I struggle to make sense of my place in the world and my art reflects my constant search for balance. It takes me back to my design process in architecture as I treat my paintings in the same way I treat a roof plan. Everything starts from the top, from the facade we will not often see by thinking how would I see it from the sky? From there I try to find balance between lines, geometric figures, spaces, textures and colours.

I include in my artwork themes of unity, movement, feminine energy, direction, tension, formality, balance of opposite, expansion, transformation, chaos and release. I use geometric figures; they are simple in construction, define with recognizable boundaries and they are both ordered and free in form.

In my paintings I often find myself using dirty-dull colours as I feel them deeper and more real, closer to home. I take pleasure using plenty of paint, creating impasto surface with bold brush marks, as I feel it completes the spaces and help me find the balance I keep looking for. I look for contrast with colours: light and dark and in this variation I create shapes and spaces that balance each other. Yellow brings the warm feeling of the sun to an otherwise dark and cold space.

In my sculptures I use lighter and more flexible materials. Different types of wire give me both the structural strength and plasticity needed to create shapes, textures and both inner and outer spaces, being honest with the natural property and quality of the materials.

I have felt the need to go bigger both in my painting and sculpture, hence the bigger size canvasses and 'The London Dream' installation, in which again I explore the tension between sharp and curve lines in order to find balance, stability, steadiness and remaining upright, as well as the relationship between them: the space."

Exhibitor: Tony Moss Fine Art

1/11/2015

Comments

Tony`s art is informed by architecture which he uses as a vehicle to explore spatial perception and representation. The nature of illusory space is a re-occurring theme. Also the creation of space via light has become part of his focus.
Much of the work is expressed via the medium of acrylic paint on canvas. However, he has increasingly used model making as a part of his process in order to continue the exploration of space, form, colour and structure. The comparison afforded by working in both two and three dimensional forms he says is of immense value. Sometimes paintings inspire models and on occasion it works the other way around. In some circumstances photography is also utilized and can become the end product.
Artistically he says that he has been influenced by numerous artists including Georgio De Chirico, Charles Sheeler, Louis Lozowick, Charles Demuth, Thomas Demand and Ed Ruscha. Architects that have been a source of inspiration in his work are Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Richard Rogers, Frank Gehry and Tadao Ando. He says that he is constantly concerned with the overlapping links between art and architecture and will continue to explore the possibilities therein. He makes the point that although architecture has always been intrinsic to his art it has become the `object` of the work as opposed to the rationale.
Travel, particularly to the USA has also been a rich source of inspiration for both subject matter and artistic knowledge. Modernism during its early years in North America and Europe have an ongoing fascination for him, as does contemporary architectural design which often has its roots in that era.

Born in the east of Ukraine, Olena studied at the University of Arts and Design in Kharkov and was awarded the 1st place in the Art Student Diploma Competition. She then went on to complete her Master’s degree in fine arts and ran a successful interior design company with an emphasis on graphic design. At the same time she continued to pursue an artistic career.

While living in Sydney for more than 10 years, Olena worked with all the painting media and often produced works using a mixture of these elements.

Olena uses the full palette and has a number of distinct styles ranging from surreal through neo industrial to real life.
Olena says her inspiration comes primarily from real life and from the interpretations she gets from seeing things in a variety of settings.

Now Olena settled in UK and working on the new series of paintings which are inspired by the uniqueness of European landscape.

"I am like an architect in my creative space, she says, I like to build the painting or drawing in my mind first. I need the vision locked in, it has to be defined, I then decide on the media I want to use, then the size of the work and finally the layout."

Exhibitor: Ian Scott Massie

Comments

Ian Scott Massie is a member of the Printmakers Circle and will be featured on their stand A15.

"I began screen printing in the mid 1970's while a student in Durham. I’ve always been drawn to the simple, graphic style of early transport posters and my prints have evolved from that. My work is chiefly aiming to portray the personality of places so colours and atmosphere are key to get the vibe of somewhere across to the viewer.

My prints use a process called reduction. The images are made by squeezing ink through a screen which has some of its area blocked off. As I print each layer I block off more and more of the screen to produce a series of silhouettes which, overlaid on each other, produce the final work.

My latest work is for Places of Pilgrimage - an exhibition I will be touring around England over the next two years showing in eight locations including Durham, Cambridge, Stourhead, Greenwich, Hexham, Devizes, Southwell and Masham."
